Alex Iwobi, a central midfielder, played in each of Nigeria’s seven matches at the AFCON 2023 competition in Ivory Coast. Following Nigeria’s defeat, former Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi came under heavy criticism on social media, but a number of Super Eagles members came together in support of the player, according to Soccernet.ng.

Iwobi, 27, participated in every game as the Super Eagles won their first silver medal since 2000. The former Everton player has 74 caps for the national football team of Nigeria.Many Nigerian football fans have targeted Iwobi for criticism after Nigeria’s defeat to Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 final. Some have even gone so far as to compare him to Jay-Jay Okocha, his uncle. Iwobi didn’t have the finest of performances; he was substituted late in the game, with Alhassan Yusuf taking his place, because he was playing out of position. The Hale End graduate stored all of his Instagram posts following the social media controversy in an effort to lessen the amount of offensive remarks he would have to endure.

Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Super Eagles, spoke out against the actions of certain fans and insisted that Iwobi was not to blame for the defeat.The Nigerian midfielder was supported by William Troost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Kenneth Omeruo, Kelechi Iheanacho, and even well-known Afrobeat crooner Falz.Iwobi had a similar end in 2022 as Nigeria lost to Cameroon in the round of sixteen of the AFCON competition.
