After Ghana’s shocking defeat at the Africa Cup of Nations finals on Sunday, an enraged fan attempted to hit coach Chris Hughton, but was apprehended by police team

officials said on Monday,  One of numerous unexpected results on Sunday was the Cape Verde Islands’ goal in stoppage time against Ghana. The Islanders are the smallest of the 24 teams competing in the event in the Ivory Coast.

As Ghana returned from the game, Hughton was confronted at the team hotel, but security personnel stopped the irate supporter.

Additionally, Hughton received a barrage of verbal abuse, officials told Reuters.

It was Ghana’s second consecutive loss to an underdog opponent, following their loss to the Comoros Islands in November during the World Cup qualifying round.

“We are deeply, deeply disappointed with the outcome. We had a plan going into the game,” Hughton said at a press conference.

“We changed the way of playing, the system a bit so that we could start on the front foot.”The side that was selected, in our opinion, was unquestionably a more offensive squad. It was our plan to do this.

“I think it rocked us the (first) goal that we conceded but I thought we got back into the game.”

In a contest where they were much favored and had a lineup consisting of players based at European clubs, Ghana fell behind after 17 minutes.

They pulled even in the second half, but Garry Rodrigues’ stoppage-time goal proved to be too much for them.

When Ghana equalized, it appeared as though we might win at that point. Hughton expressed his extreme disappointment at the outcome.

“And I know, and this category of players also recognize, how the Ghanaian people see this game, see this tournament and our expectations going into this one.”

Hughton, whose father was from Ghana, was a former Ireland international and has been the squad’s coach since March. He served as a technical advisor for the team at the 2022 World Cup championships in Qatar. Hughton has four victories in 11 games.
