As quickly as it started, it came to an end, leaving her helpless. The roaring laughter of Brian filled the room. Sophie couldn’t bear looking at him, instead, she focused on gaining balance. She felt so dizzy, almost slipping in unconsciousness. She still couldn’t fathom what had just happened.
Brian walked to the side of her bed, noticing his presence, she struggled to pull her eyes open — it was a blurry sight of Brian’s face. Smiling. He was smiling at her.

“Why will Brian be smiling at me? Didn’t he see the pain I just passed through?” She pondered, blinking her eyes to clear the fog.

“I enjoyed every bit of it sweetheart.” He smiled even broader.

“Every bit of what?!” Her voice came out in a near whisper.

He started waving something in his hands. She squinted, trying to see it properly. The realization struck her hard.

“An electric circuit!” Her eyes widened in shock, as she caught a glimpse of the several long wires connected to it.

“Did you just electrocute me?”

“I sure did. Hope you enjoyed it?” He looked back at a chair in a near distance.

“Cos I did. It was like sitting in a cinema and watching an exciting movie. I can still feel my heart racing in excitement.” He turned back to her, his face dripping with genuine excitement.

“How can you do this to me Brian??” Sophie was shocked.

“We have a long way to go Sophie. This is just the start.” He straightened and started to walk away from her, his face tightened up in a frown.

Sophie tried as she could and was able to sit up. She was determined to go after him and plead with him, clinging to the hope that he still might have some human conscience left in him. As she tried to get off the bed, she plunged her legs into a small pool of cold water. She winced, trying to shrug off the water.

“What?!! What a death blow! Just imagine, metal bed in water! He must have poured the water when I slept off last night. He really wants me dead.” She thought to herself as she managed out of bed and started to follow Brian.

Birds chirped loudly in melodious harmony. As if taking a cue, the long grasses swayed in rhythm. Sophie squinted as she stepped out of the warehouse into the warm sunrise. Using her hands to shield her eyes, she gazed up at the sunrise, temporarily lost in its beauty. A peaceful smile enveloped her face, one she had not experienced in the past two days. She let it linger, savoring the moment.

A loud bang jolted her out of her reverie. She jerked, turning her head quickly towards her right. She saw Brian hitting hard on wood with a hammer. Just seeing him brought about a despondent feeling down her gut.

“Why did I ever meet this man! A terrible psychopath.” She muttered under her breath.

“You were the psychopath few years ago.” Her subconscious whispered back.

As startling as the response was, she knew it was true. Regret overwhelmed her as she covered her face with both palms.

“I have to talk with him. At least I have to try.” She tried encouraging herself one last time.

She approached Brian tentatively, careful not to arouse the sleeping lion too early. On reaching him, she stood at a safe distance.

Clearing her throat,

“Errrmm Brian, please can I talk with you for a minute?”

Silence. The hammer was still at work, much harder this time, the sound deafening. She flinched, knowing that her words angered him.

“I am really sorry for all the pain I caused you. I was only myopic and sentimental in my judgement. Please I’m begging you. Forgive me.” She raised her voice as loud as she could, over the noise.

The place was abruptly quiet, except for the clanging noise of a hammer dumped in a metal box full of working tools.

“Forgive you!! Forgive you!!!” He shouted at the top of his voice, shaking his head in unbelief. His eyes burned with hatred and bitterness.

“I know I’ve hurt you but…..”

“Shut the hell up!! What do you know!!?” He turned his back against her, breathing heavily like an angry animal. When he turned to face her, she almost jumped out of her skin seeing the look in his eyes.

“Sophie, you did not only hurt me, you took away my soul and left me. Just like that!” He threw his hands in the air, laughing monstrously.

“I’m s–so–rr-y Brian. I’ll do anything to…..”

Before she could complete her sentence, a hard blow struck her succulent cheek, sending her to the muddy ground. She couldn’t believe it. How did he cover the space between them so fast that she didn’t even see his hand coming. She held her left cheek, wincing in pain and trying to catch her breath. Her fingers touched some liquid close to her mouth. When she looked at it, it was blood.

Brian’s muddy boots were very close to her legs, she could see them from where she lay her head. Unsure of his next move, she struggled to push herself away from him.

Her attempt to crawl away was abruptly cut short as a hand grasped both her legs and began dragging her.

“You think you can escape from me?!!! You fool!” He was panting heavily as he continued dragging her on the ground.

“Please, I’m begging you.” Her words, greatly choked by tears.

“Your time for mercy is long gone! It’s time for my revenge!” He pulled harder, making her cry more out in pain and anguish.

Sophie’s body bumped against every twist and turn on the road, contributing more to the body ache she already felt. She cried all the more louder as she felt the last strands of hope fade away. She accepted her fate. If death was her fate, so be it.

Was Sophie’s past so horrible that it could take her life?

Do you think Brian will forgive her?

If you were in Sophie’s shoe, what would you do seeing the circumstances?

Please drop your comments and let’s enjoy the ride.

  1. I can’t even imagine the gravity of her past to make him treat her mercilessly.

As for Brian, there’s a slim possibility between forgiving her and killing her, and the crazy part it, we don’t know what she did!! 😩😩😩😩😩

If I was Sophie, I would probably keep begging, maybe find a soft spot that would resonate with him. 🤔
