Brian could still hear the footsteps of the Officer hot on his chase. He kept pushing his weary legs to continue the race. The barn was in sight now and all he envisioned was getting in there and seeing how to maneuver his way out. He broke into a clearing, doubling up his speed. Being in an open space without any shield was a huge risk.

He dashed for the red door of the brown colored barn. It was old and abandoned. The door slid open without much stress, but he was left with the challenge of adjusting to the overwhelming darkness. He stood, rooted to the ground, squinting until he was sure he could make out the mass of straw in a corner and the several stall demarcations for the horses. The air was humid with the smell of damp straw and manure. He bolted the door with a large wooden log and sprang to one of the stalls to hide.

Officer Jade headed straight for the door taking a mild cautious run. His back against the door and gun extended, he slowly went round the barn to ensure that there wasn’t any other route and no way of escape. He wore a satisfied grin. This was it! He had the culprit in a box.

‘Stealth’ was one of his good attributes that had catapulted him to his present position as senior officer and he would make sure to use it well even now. He scanned the roof of the barn and noticed a gap in the roof. It must have pulled apart due to excessive rain through the years. Tucking his gun into his trouser, he rolled a large stone to that side of the barn and then climbed onto it.

Meticulously, he climbed up using the nails that were halfway stuck in the wet wood. Gritting his teeth at the pain, he continued climbing. Plummeting himself like a trained athlete, he swung his body through the gap and landed lightly on his forefeet.

Apart from the blackness, he saw no one except the array of stalls to the left. That was the only place conducive for a hideout and so he slowly walked towards them, checking each one before moving on.

Brian could hear the soft movement of boots in each stall and he could tell the steps were approaching the stall where he was. He ran his eyes all over the stall, searching for any possible way out, but no, there was none! Heart beating rapidly, he wiped away sweat from his temple and rubbed wet palms against his worn out jeans.

“If I die… I die a hero in my own way.” He merried with that thought, waiting in anxiety.

Officer Jade’s instinct told him there had to be someone in the fifth stall. He could sense it. Clutching the gun tightly, he headed towards the stall, stilling his pounding heart.

He paused a minute, listening and waiting. There was no sound. He stepped in swiftly, gun extended.

Wide-eyed, he met the grim glare of Brian with a black silencer aimed directly at him. The two men stood with guns aimed at each other, time froze for a moment.
