Rafael van der Vaart, a former Netherlands international, has disparaged Barcelona player Frenkie De Jong, calling him a “postman”.

In the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League match, Barcelona and Napoli tied 1-1, and Van der Vaart was not happy with De Jong’s performance. The former player for Real Madrid and Tottenham asserted that his countryman plays “like a postman” and is unable to maintain the necessary speed.

While acting as a pundit, Van der Vaart stated on Ziggo Sport in the Netherlands (via Mundo Deportivo): “Frenkie de Jong plays football like a postman.” He runs with the ball and carries it to his teammate too long instead of passing it forward. You must pass the ball and keep it going after you have moved past your opponent.”

Injury has plagued De Jong this season; earlier this year, he missed seven La Liga games due to an ankle problem. Despite this, he has only managed to score one goal this season and has not provided an assist.

As he has not yet agreed to a new contract, De Jong has been connected to teams like Manchester United and Chelsea and has been linked to leaving the Catalan club. Barcelona has given him till the end of the current season to sign a new contract or depart.
