Rumor has it that Liverpool is interested in signing Alan Varela, a rising star at Porto who has the backing of former Wolves captain Ruben Neves.

The 22-year-old from Boca Juniors paid €8 million (£6.8 million) to join the Portuguese powerhouses in August, but he has already made a name for himself as a mainstay in Sergio Conceicao’s plans.

Varela has participated in 28 games for Porto across all competitions this season. He has put up a number of strong performances and was the standout of last week’s 1-0 Champions League Round of 16 victory over Arsenal.

Additionally, Liverpool is reportedly thinking of exercising Varela’s €70 million (£60 million) release clause in the summer, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo.

Prior to the current campaign, the Reds made significant additions to their midfield, including Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister.

Furthermore, it seems Liverpool is determined to make the most of the transfer window given that Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Anfield at the end of the current campaign.

The midfielder, who signed a deal with Porto last summer and has until June 2028 to complete it, played 111 games for Boca Juniors before making his debut for Argentina.

Additionally, Varela has already won over former Wolves and Porto standout Ruben Neves, who called him a “complete” midfield player.

He’s a really good player. The Portuguese, who played for Porto for six seasons, told O Jogo that it was a great signing for the team and possibly their most consistent reinforcement in terms of time and quality of play.

He is incredibly aggressive, consistently positions himself perfectly in defensive situations, and recently, he has been moving a little bit closer to the goal, which has improved his passing and finishing skills.

“He’s already got two goals.”

And has been one of the most crucial members of the team and is incredibly complete.

Varela is reportedly being watched by Manchester City as well, according to Bolavip, a Spanish publication.

On the Daily Briefing podcast, Fabrizio Romano pointed out that the Premier League champions were not at a particularly advanced level.

According to rumors circulating, Varela is being watched by a number of elite teams, including Manchester City. However, as of right now, he remarked, “It’s just regular scouting, nothing more sophisticated than that.”
