Mallorca is back in the Copa del Rey final, having missed it for just over twenty years.

On Wednesday (AEDT), the Spanish team—which is partially owned by former NBA great Steve Nash and Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr—beat Real Sociedad 5-4 in a penalty shootout to go to the championship match 21 years after taking first place in the competition just once.

Dominik Greif, the goalie for Mallorca, stopped Mikel Oyarzabal’s first penalty kick, and Sergi Darder scored the game-winning kick to advance Mallorca to the championship. At Sociedad’s Reale Arena, the teams drew 1-1 in regulation and went scoreless in extra time.

On February 6, the teams drew 0-0 in the first leg in Mallorca.

Either Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao, who play the second leg of the other semi-final on Friday in Bilbao, will play Mallorca in the final on April 6 in Seville. In Madrid, Athletic prevailed 1-0 in the first leg.

Mallorca, who hasn’t been to the championship game since defeating Recreativo Huelva in the 2003 competition, will be playing in its fourth Copa final. They made two more farewell visits in 1991 and 1998.

For the first time since defeating rivals Athletic to win the trophy in the 2019–20 campaign, Sociedad was attempting to make it back to the cup final.

Gio Gonzalez’s header into the far corner gave Mallorca the lead in the 50th minute, marking the visitors’ lone effort on goal during regulation. A lengthy delay occurred before the goal was officially declared as the video analysis searched for any potential offsides in the build-up.

After over thirty tries during the game, the hosts equalized in the 71st minute when Oyarzabal scored with a low drive following a wonderful through ball from Brais Mendez.

In the Spanish first division, Mallorca, who are now narrowly outside the relegation zone, had only triumphed once in their previous six games.

Sociedad, who ranked seventh after 26 league matches, had only one victory in their previous seven games overall. After losing the first leg of their match against Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in France, the Basque Country team advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League.
