Sunday’s 2-0 Eredivisie victory over Almere City for Feyenoord included two goals from loaned Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh.

The 19-year-old’s goals were his fifth and sixth of the season, with one coming during the Champions League group stage. Minteh received special recognition for his amazing opening goal, which struck the upper left corner of the net with a curling attempt off the edge of the box.

The current Dutch champions took the lead and won the three points thanks to a first-time strike in stoppage time.

Minteh paid approximately £7 million to join Newcastle from Odense in the summer, and he was later loaned to Feyenoord for the 2023–24 campaign. Amidst an injury problem, there was discussion of Newcastle bringing Minteh back to the team during the January transfer window. But the club didn’t try to shorten his loan term because there was no recall clause.

Just 11 of Minteh’s 25 Feyenoord outings have been as a starter. Though he had an impressive loan period, the young player has faced some criticism.

Journalist Mikos Gouka of Algemeen Dagblad stated earlier this month: “I have witnessed Minteh enter the field, but because he walks wherever he shouldn’t, the bench has been yelling at him for thirty minutes while he is standing there.

“He’s not sure where to stand in dead moments. He is an intuitive player who makes all of his decisions. It was eighteen months ago that he was an amateur. He’s not managing it well enough overall.

However, during his brief stay in the Netherlands thus far, his development has been apparent. He will finish the season with Feyenoord before joining the Newcastle team in summer, where he will undergo preseason evaluations.
